PFAS (“forever chemicals”) don’t break down in the environment or the human body. 3M’s Decatur facility manufactured PFOA, PFOS, and related compounds for decades, with discharges reaching the Tennessee River — the raw water source for communities across North Alabama. The West Morgan-East Lawrence Water Authority settled with 3M and built a new treatment plant; in May 2026, Huntsville Utilities sued 3M, DuPont, Daikin and others over the cost of removing PFAS from its water.
